How to Summarize Long Texts and Books

Articles, reports, and scientific papers come to mind when you think about summarising anything. Texts that aren’t too long.

But this isn’t always the case, and you’ll have to deal with a variety of publications, including studies, detailed reports, and even entire volumes…

In this scenario, you must apply a different method and decide whether to utilize summarise in a traditional or machine-assisted manner.

Also, bear in mind that summarising is not the same as paraphrasing (stating something in a new way), so you should know when to use summarise and when to paraphrase when working with extensive texts.

Summarizing long texts: choosing a strategy

When summarising big texts or novels, the key challenge is to effectively organise the material. You may choose different strategies:

  1. Read the full book or text, making notes as you go, and then try to summarise everything in one step by producing a text that condenses the contents of the book in your own words.
  2. Do tiny summaries of each chapter or paragraph as you read, and then use this information to build a broader summary.
  3. Read the book fast to get a sense of the most essential thought or ideas it contains. Then, to explain how the various sections or chapters relate to the core idea, create a conceptual map. Use these information to create your summary.

Summarization by Simplification

One of the most difficult things about writing is figuring out how to summarize a complex article. This can be especially challenging when you’re dealing with a topic that you’re not very familiar with. However, there is a way to simplify the process of summarizing an article: by using simplification.

When you use simplification, you break down the main ideas of the article into smaller, more manageable pieces. This makes it much easier to identify the most important information and to put together a clear and concise summary. Additionally, simplification can help you to understand the article as a whole better.

If you’re struggling to summarize an article, give simplification a try. It just might make the process a whole lot easier.

When do you need a Summary?

How Intellippt simplifies the text?

Our summaries employ abduction, do not require any prior training or ontologies, are generated based on semantic significance, and DO NOT USE WORD-FREQUENCY AT ALL, which is a risky strategy because significant content may not be stated frequently enough and may be overlooked by traditional methods.

It is worth noting that if there are many sentences with roughly the same meaning (subject to an equivalence measure specified by the user), our summarising system only shows one of them, resulting in far more powerful summaries than previous approaches.

Our method involves simplification, followed by the generation of an ideogram (graphical pictures or symbols that represent an idea or concept) for each sentence, the generation of a volume of interest around the sequence produced by the first document, and the inclusion in the summary of any sentences from other documents that fall within this volume; i.e. offer additional knowledge and are relevant.
